Tican × Simplewire · Digital cable identification in operation

How Tican reduces downtime during production stoppages

When a machine loses power, every minute counts. With digital cable identification from Simplewire, Tican's technicians locate the correct circuit faster and can begin troubleshooting.

Tican

Tican is one of Denmark's largest pork producers, with production facilities in Thisted and Brørup. The company employs around 1,000 people and supplies fresh, frozen and customised products to customers in Denmark and internationally.

The challenge

When the power goes out, the search for the correct circuit begins

“When we have a power failure in production, we have 3,000 fuses to check to find the correct supply.”
Tonny JessenFacility Manager at Tican in Thisted

When a power failure occurs, the first task is to establish an overview. In an interconnected production environment, a single fault can stop several processes, making the first few minutes critical.

Why the problem occurs

Physical labels cannot withstand the environment

Illustration · Cleaning environment

In food production, installations are thoroughly cleaned every day. Water, chemicals and wear mean that physical labels become damaged or disappear over time.

As the installation is expanded and modified over time, cable routes become more complex and labels harder to keep up to date. The time spent searching therefore becomes part of the production stoppage.

“We have invested heavily in our physical labels, but they simply cannot withstand our environment. The problem is that we need the labels most when something goes wrong, and that is often when they are gone. It costs time and lost production.”

The workflow at Tican

From the electrical panel to identification on the scanner

One setup in the electrical panel. Two steps when a cable or item of electrical equipment needs to be identified.

  1. A Core Clip is fitted around a cable in an electrical panel
01 · At the electrical panel

The identification is linked to the cable

A Core Clip is fitted to the outgoing cable. During setup, the selected Clip is linked to the cable's registered ID.

  2. A technician scans next to a machine in Tican's production environment
    02 · At the installation

The technician scans at the installation

The scanner is held close to the cable or item of electrical equipment that needs to be identified.

  3. Sharp close-up of the identification shown on the Core scanner display at Tican
    03 · On the display

    The identification is displayed

The scanner displays the registered ID and gives the technician a clear starting point for the next stage of the work.

Straightforward to implement

New technology must fit into an operation that already works

When production depends on stable operations, new technology must support the existing workflow, not disrupt it. At Tican, Core has been deployed with a clearly defined technical scope and clear parameters for use.

Technical scope
The part of the installation in which digital identification is used.
Day-to-day use
Who will use the identification, and in which situations?
Documentation
The documentation that supports operations and future expansion.

Could it create value for your facility too?

Start with a brief technical assessment

Every production facility is different. That is why we begin with a discussion about your installations, workflows and challenges. Together, we assess whether digital cable identification can create value for your organisation.
